Console Gaming versus PC Gaming: Input device wars

So, I wrote about changes that will have to come to MLG sooner than later, IMO. Give it a read here. http://rapture.hushedcasket.com/08/23/2006/console_gaming_versus_pc_gaming_input_device_warsThe article discusses keyboards, mice, and handheld controllers and the future of MLG when it comes to changes in the XBOX 360 platform. Yeah, it's a year off or so...but so is HALO 3.

Console Gaming versus PC Gaming: Input device wars

Major League Gaming, the premiere console-only competitive gaming league, has said that PC gamers are geeks and that computers are not meant for gaming – they are meant for checking your email. It’s a marketing stance from their top leadership. MLG believes that console gamers are “cooler” than PC gamers.

But is MLG going to have to change their stance soon? Will keyboards and mice be making their way onto MLG events?

I think they will sooner than later without the introduction of PC’s per say at MLG events.

You see, the discussion about console gaming versus PC gaming really boils down to input devices. Console gaming doesn’t currently support keyboards and mice as native input devices. But, one day it will. When that day comes to console gaming, you’re basically limited to handheld input devices like the XBOX controller.

Competitive video gaming news

Major League Gaming signed 5 players to 3-year $250K contracts. That averages out to near $83K per year for each player for 36 months. These players basically become salaried employees of MLG with responsibilities other than gaming, like press and media events. (source)

DirecTV will broadcast 2006 Cyberathlete Professional League events. This is major news as the leading digital television provider is showing interest in beaming these events to viewers around the world. Look for the Winter CPL event to be shown in late December 2006. (source) Console gamers are starting to use "the claw", a way of holding an XBOX controller.

The claw is a way to use 3 fingers on one hand to input commands on a controller. It appears to me that this is a sign that console gamers want more input options. I think it's a matter of time before we see console gamers using keyboards and mice as input devices. More of that later. (source)

EA's Xbox - Mar 18 2010

EA showed up yesterday and we were like a superhero team together. I make a great sidekick! Gamerscore stands at 17,587. Up up and away right? He rocked out to Battlefield Bad Co. 2, and yeah... wow... my processor hurts...
